In lieu of what I have recently done/read/listened to and so on and so forth, I am declaring today as Bathory Tribute day. (Then again, I declare many other days as that as well, but today in specific, I would like to make note, that I, yes, I, will write a short narrative about Bathory, inasmuch as what I think of them, which albums of Bathory's I possess, which I want to possess, what I have seen, done, and so on, as far as relationship to Bathory.)
Our story begins where our hero, me, learns of my friend from High School mentions that his "house-brother" Martyn has an album by a band called Bathory. Sure, this is back in 93-ish, although I can't remember, but I remember that this Martyn is a netherlander; a blond, drunken, crazy-man of a netherlander, who happens to be one of the (or, rather, The) coolest netherlander that I have ever possibly had the chance to meet. Now, not only is this netherlander a kick-ass dude to chill with, -but-, he also possessed a copy of Hammerheart by Bathory, a copy on Tape of which my friend from High School, copied and passed off to me. For long years I never truly realized the gem I had in that copied tape that had been given to me, until one year later (approximately, heh), I listened to the album in entirety, in a place where I couldn't exactly escape its sound. The shower. Yes, the shower. I did enjoy listening to good metal in the shower during high-school, whereas I could growl along with without choking, because of the nifty hot steam (I -do- like my showers hot.). Bathory didn't so much as growl, but Quorthon had that almost unrecognizable accent and spoke in Tongues, because I could not understand what the hell the bastard was singing about at first. It took several listens, and finally a search on the internet (which at the time was very not so happenin', mainly because I believe, if I recall correctly I had to use something like Turbo Gopher? Yeah, I think that's it) to browse the old Image-free internet of pure text. In fact, I recall that at that point, it was mainly college systems, it was more popular to log into BBSes at the time. Yes, BBSes.
In fact, I couldn't find very much information on Bathory on the internet. Almost none at that point, and I searched and searched, until finally I found a copy of Hammerheart's lyrics on a BBS (amazingly enough), A BBS called 'City Lights', ran locally here in Minnesota, by some guy probably. Now, I can't exactly describe the sort of tunes that occupies this album, but I must say that Hammerheart is an incredibly powerful album of the sort of epic / nordic genre. When I listen to it, I totally fall into the whole powerful feeling of it. It is not very fast and hardcore, but very slow and soothing, but powerful all at once, unlike much of Rock'n'Roll. It almost made you want to put some small villages (or churches if you live in Norway) to the torch! Although I didn't do anything of the kind, regardless of my desire to do so or not.
Regardless, I suffered through several years Bathory-less because there was no real means to find it, and of course, I was totally like young and flighty because I had no real attention span for any single thing, except for Women & Weed ... *cough* Well, and my friends of course (they usually sat higher then either of the two former things, so...) Anyhow, I listened to the ole
Root of All Evil radio show a lot, and heard many bands and stuff that I still have to this day on tape (I recorded from the Root regularily)... and eventually came to a point where I found a cool record/CD/Tape store called
NIGHTFALL RECORDS run by, our favorite: Don Decker (who is that man?! The LEAD SINGER for :
ANAL BLAST.) Yeah, run out and shop there kiddies, you can get some kick-ass, bad-mother*expletive deleted* Metal to Kill by!
As I was saying, I found this shop when I lived in South Minneapolis (woe & betied) with my ex(crement)-roomate "Brian" circa.1999 and managed to score several other albums by Bathory on CD. Bathory, The Return, Under the Sign of the Black Mark, Twilight of the Gods, Blood Fire Death, Blood on Ice, Octagon (this is a bull-shit album) ... and I think one more, but I can't remember the name. I was immediately enraptured by Blood Fire Death, Twilight of the Gods, Blood on Ice & Most Especially
Under the Sign of the Black Mark. Why was I enraptured so by this album?! (2) Songs: Woman of Dark Desires & EQUIMANTHORN. For some reason, above this is my favorite kinda, hardcore song by Bathory, although I do love : Fine Day to Die, Necromansy, 13 Candles, and so on and so forth... but still, my favorite Bathory song of all-time is: Shores in Flames, off the Hammerheart Album. ( I will note that the first 3 albums (Bathory, The Return & Blood Fire Death, were recorded at a horrible audio-quality ** or at least on my Cd-player it sounds like sh*t). I also purched the "In Conspiracy with Satan - Tribute to Bathory" album with great bands such as : Dark Funeral, Marduk, Emperor, Satyricon ... and so on. (All the songs pretty much kick-ass)
Well, let's see. What else can I mention about them. Since I listened to them, I've loved them and been a fan ever since, ever since and until I heard the rumor about Quorthon being dead from a heart problem.
All I can say to that:
Northern wind take my song up high
To the Hall of glory in the sky
So its gates shall greet me open wide
When my time has come to die
Well, I wish that it's not true, but, it seems to me that it is most likely the truth. And so ends, pretty much any new Bathory that I will listen to, although I do have to purchase "Nordland" and so on, any other albums by Bathory that I do not currently possess and replace an album or two *cough* that I may have spilled something on back in the day.. (or maybe it was my ex(crement)-roomate - not sure, that time was a blur, heh)
Arright, aside from my Bathory thing. I added a little mid- file to this site, if you don't like it, tough shit, because you, the user, don't have a very strong voice (considering, there's like 1 of you, you bastard), so... maybe you will like it, maybe not, but it comes from the old PC-DoS game
NOCTROPOLIS , which is "City of Night" apparently. Either way, was an old kick-ass game, back in the day. like, 1994 or 95... by EA if I recall correctly (haven't they been around for-ever?!)
Anyhow, time for me to go do something else.
Later,
\Koltur
